TRADITION
West Brunswick Football has established itself as one of the premiere football programs in Southeastern North Carolina since its opening in 1973.
The Trojans are proud owners of two NCHSAA State Championships (1992,1993) , three Eastern Regional Championships (1991, 1992,1993) , and nine conference championships (1975, 1988, 1991, 1993 , 1994, 1995, 1997, 2009, 2012) , and eight ten-win seasons (1988, 1991,1992,1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 2019).
Early Trojan leaders Jimmy Marshall and Paul Willougby led West to an undefeated regular season in 1975 and the programs first conference championship and began to establish community support from the consolidation of Shallotte, Waccamaw, and Union High Schools. This helped lay the foundation for future success
Under the leadership of Marshall Seay, West Brunswick ascended to regional power in the late 1980s and his reign culminated in West Brunswick's first trip to the State Championship game in 1991 where they eventually lost to Thomasville.
Coach Seays lasting legacy may be the institution of the Michigan Wings on the WBHS Helmet. Since 1986, West Brunswick has worn the wings with the exception of the 2002-2005 time period.
NCHSAA Hall of Famer Jim Brett arrived in 1992 and led the Trojans to the 1992 2A State Title where his team defeated four consecutive undefeated teams including the State Championship over Maiden. Despite moving up in classification the next season, West repeated as State Champions after defeating High Point Andrews in 1993.
Despite following an impossible act, WBHS kept rolling under Yogi Hickman. The father of current WBHS Head Coach Brett Hickman, Yogi led the Trojans to three conference championships, three ten win seasons, and resigned as the schools winningest head coach with 53 wins.
Jimmy Fletcher's tenure is the longest in program history. Serving as the Trojans head man from 2003-2012, Coach Fletcher is the last coach to lead the Trojans past the second round of the playoffs and won conference championships in 2009 and 2012.
The 2019 team achieved the programs first top ten state ranking in two decades, won ten games for the first time in 22 years and has undoubtedly left the program in great shape moving forward.
In the 2021 Spring Season, the Trojans finished 6-2, garnered a state top 20 ranking, and advanced to the states Quarterfinal round for the first time since 2003.
