Brett Hickman
Former West Brunswick Quarterback Brett Hickman is entering his fourth year heading his alma mater. Hired in March of 2018, Hickman has helped engineer a quick turnaround and restored West as one of Southeastern North Carolina's premiere high school football programs.
The programs 21 wins in his first three seasons are the best start for a WBHS Head Football Coach since his father, Yogi Hickman, won 29 from 1994-96. The elder is the schools winningest Head Coach with 53 victories garnered from 1994-1999.
Inheriting a program that won forty-two percent of their games from 2000-2017 and only thirty-nine percent of MEC games during the same time frame, Hickman and his staff set about changing a culture and returning West to its winning tradition of the late 1980's and 1990's.. Three years in and the results have been resounding as West has finished ranked in the top 20 of states 3A programs twice, won 21 games, and owns a 15-5 MEC record including a 7-2 record against the leagues 4A schools. After a 5-6 opening frame in 2018, West has a two year record of 16-4 (11-2).
2019 was a landmark return to prominence for West Brunswick as Hickman led the Trojans to ten wins for the first time since 1997 and a Top Ten ranking in both the AP North Carolina High School poll and the CarolinaPreps.com rankings. The season included the programs first win over Hoggard High School since 1997, five shutout victories, and a school record set on defense for points allowed in a season.
Following up the 2019 campaign and in the midst of the COVID 19 pandemic, WBHS replaced 14 starters included 6 college football signees, and went 6-2. The 5-1 MEC ledger gave the Trojans a second consecutive runner up in the conference. With a 42-35 win in the East Regional Quarterfinals vs Chapel Hill, West advanced to the state quarterfinals for the first time since 2003; Hickman's senior year of High School.
Prior to returning to Shallotte, Hickman served as a full-time college assistant for nine seasons with time at Gardner-Webb University and North Greenville University. At North Greenville, he worked under current Coastal Carolina Head Coach, Jamey Chadwell. Additionally, Coach Hickman served as a Graduate Assistant at East Carolina from 2006-2008 under Pirate Head Coach Skip Holtz.
A graduate of East Carolina University, Coach Hickman teaches American History at WBHS.
Coach Hickman and his wife Sara, have two boys; Henry (5) and Jack (2).
Caleb Pardue
Assistant Head Coach/ Defensive Coordinator/ Spurs and Safeties
Starmount native, Caleb Pardue is entering his fourth season as West Brunswick's Defensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach.
The 2019 Trojan Defense set school records for fewest points and yards allowed per game. Additionally, eight Trojan defenders garnered All-Conference Honors.
In the spring of 2021, the Trojans continued their dominant defensive performance while giving up just 15 ppg in route to a 6-2 record and a berth in the state quarterfinals.
Coach has been on the staffs at Walkertown, Watagua, and Starmount High School. In 2014, he was a part of the Starmount staff that led the Rams to the 1AA State Championship Game.
Coach Pardue also serves as the Head Baseball Coach at West and is a teacher in the Social Studies Department. He and his wife Molly (also a WBHS teacher) are the parents of a little girl, Stella (2)
Scott Loosemore
Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach
Scott Loosemore is entering his second year as the offensive line coach and playcaller at West Brunswick.
In his first year, the Trojans averaged 25 points per game and 250 yards rushing on their way to a 6-2 record and berth in the State Quarterfinals. Additionally, Quarterback Monzelle Campbell was named MEC Offensive Player of the Year with over 1800 total yards of offense.
A veteran of coaching for nearly 30 years; Loosemore came to WBHS after serving as the Defensive Coordinator at state power Scotland High School. In his two years with the Scots, he helped lead the 4A team to the state finals.
Additionally, Loosmore has served as the head coach at Cedar Ridge High School and Eastern Guilford while having a distinguished career that includes stops at Elon, NC A&T, Page HS, Grimsley HS, and SE Guilford HS.
He and his wife Karen have grown children and reside in Little River.
Yogi Hickman
Coach Yogi is in his 22ndst season as either a Head Coach or Assistant Coach at West. He is the schools winningest head coach and the only one who owns three ten-win seasons and three conference championships.
Prior to his time at West, Coach Hickman led the St. Pauls High School program to 66 wins during a six year run from 1988-1994 and served as the Offensive Coordinator at Whiteville from 1984-1987 where the Pack won the State Championship in '87.
He and his wife Gail have been married 40 years are the proud of parents of three grown children (Will, Brett, and Sam). The couple also has six grandchildren all under the age of seven.
Jacob Tutterrow
Wide Receivers
Coach Tutterrow enters his third year as the WR's coach at West. In his first season, he tutored two All-Conference players. Prior to his time at West, he was an Assistant Coach at Davie High School and North Iredell High School
In addition to his football duties, Coach "Tut" is the Head Wrestling Coach and a Social Studies Teacher at WBHS.
Woody Dunn
Defensive Line
Coach Dunn is entering his fifth season as the Defensive Line coach at West Brunswick. In 2019, all three of his starters captured All-Conference Honors and J'vian McCray was selected to play in the prestigious NC-SC Shrine Bowl Game.
Prior to coaching at West, Coach Dunn spent time coaching at his prep alma mater, North Myrtle Beach High School.
A retired Brunswick County Sheriffs Deputy, Coach Dunn and his wife Amanda have two daughters and a son.
Mike Loutzenheizer
Coach Lotz is entering his second year on the staff at WBHS and will continue to coach the inside linebackers. Prior to joining the staff at West, coach has served in various capacities in both North Carolina High School football and Arizona High School football.
In addition to a three year tenure as the head coach at Southwest Randolph High School, Coach has been an assistant at Broughton and Pinecrest.
He and his wife Shea have four daughters and a son.
Keith Wood
A native of suburban Dallas, Coach Wood is entering his third season at West after leading the JV Trojans to a 7-2 record and a Conference Championship in 2019.
Coach Wood has spent time as the Head Coach at Fairmont High School where he led the Golden Tornadoes to an eleven win season in 2011 and has served as an Assistant Coach at Regional Powers Scotland County High School and Hoggard High School prior to joining the West staff in 2018.
Coach is the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at West and is married to his wife Emily. The couple has a son, Cayden (10).
Allen Bryant
Coach Bryant joined the staff in 2019 and helps out with the JV Program in addition to being a local businessman. He has served as a coach in the Brunswick County Youth Program and enjoyed a playing career at Midway High School and East Carolina University.
He and his wife Tracey have three daughters.
Mike Head
Outside Linebackers/JV Defensive Coordinator
Coach Mike Head joined the WBHS staff in 2020 after a successful tenure as an assistant and Head Coach in his native Tennessee. At West, Coach Head coached outside linebacker True Robinson to first team All-MEC honors and Mikal Simpson to Honorable Mention.
In addition, Coach Head serves as an assistant basketball coach at WBHS.
DR Peek
DR Peek serves as the Tight Ends coach at West Brunswick and is entering his second year with the program in the fall of 2021.
A native of Concord, Coach Peek coached at the Cannon School under former Carolina Panther Brad Hoover before relocating to Holden Beach.
After a standout prep career at NW Cabarrus, Coach Peek went on to play at Lenoir-Rhyne University under Fred Goldsmith and current ECU Head Coach Mike Houston.
He and his wife Casey have a three year old son (Noah) and reside in Holden Beach.
